Looking for that perfect hat? At the Kentucky Derby, Louisvillians know for women, “It’s all about the hat” on the first Saturday in May. Helen Overfield knows the tradition well, having attended the Kentucky Oaks and Derby for over 25 years. She has been creating her one-of-a-kind hats and fascinators for decades for friends, family and select clients with her Hats Off by Helen business. “Of course they are made with the Kentucky Derby in mind,” says Overfield, “but I have worn them to the Breeders' Cup, Kentucky Oaks, Preakness, Belmont Stakes, and Keeneland….anyplace where wearing a hat is de rigueur.”

 

Two Hats Off by Helen creations were chosen by the Kentucky Derby Museum to be featured along with 18 other hats in a year-long exhibit entitled “It’s My Derby” complete with American Pharaoh’s trainer’s attire 2015-2016. The "Judge's Choice" Award was given to a Hats Off by Helen fascinator for the 2018-2019 exhibit at the Museum. The "Hat Most Representative of the Kentucky Derby" Award 2019-2020 went to one of Hats Off by Helen's hats.

In addition to the Kentucky Derby, attendees at the Breeders' Cup, Saratoga,  Atlanta Steeplechase,  Preakness   Belmont,  Del Mar,  Nashville Steeplechase, Carolina Cup,  North Carolina Steeplechase, Queen’s Plate and other equestrian events have all inquired about buying a hat made in the Bluegrass State.

 

Besides the fancy feathers, flowers, ribbon and trim embellishments, each unique Hat’s Off! creation is creatively named with titles resembling the announcer’s call of the fastest two minutes in sports. Names such as “Winner by a Nose,” “Millionaire’s Row,” “Fleur de Filly,” and “Pink in the Paddock” add to the headwear experience. An added bonus coming with each hat (or fascinator) are two “lucky boxed exacta numbers” specific to the buyers hat. “They can have fun betting at the track with their personalized lucky numbers” Overfield adds, “The payoff can be a pretty as their hat if a long shot wins!"
